Southern Pomo Switch-Reference and Its Origins within Pomoan

This paper describes the Southern Pomo switch-reference system used in narrative texts. In this genre, is shown to be canonical: suffixes applied dependent verbs indicate whether or not subject of verb shared with a single TAM-bearing main verb. compared systems (or lack thereof) reported for other six Pomoan languages. Only Kashaya have same system. The five languages different none at all. It asserted that was present Proto-Pomo and developed ways subset offspring through entirely internal changes without influence from non-Pomoan language contact. those where (whether canonical not) developed, dedicated bound morphemes are hypothesized been elaborated around two suffixes, *-Vn *-p?i.
